Ardennes Recce July 2011

Dermot Gallagher writes:

Good morning everyone, thanks for a wonderful weekend and such comaraderie. It was a great learning experience and I'm sure everyone has taken a lot away from the few days. Frank and Bob, did a great job putting it all together for us and we certainly parcelled a lot into the few days.

Regarding photos, I have a cahin of 270 photos starting at Liege and finishing at Namur...completely documenting the route followed in the order we did the trip. Everyone's stand has a number of shots including the background area. My proposal is that anyone who wants any or all photos just emails me at 'tomredg@talktalk.net and they will be returned to you. don't forget I have the album of the 1944 b/w shots about 400 in total if anyone needs them in the future.

A special thanks to Tony for his wit and time spend at the wheel.. good on you mate!

Back to retirement and my vege garden now... must dash, dogs to walk!

I could not have hoped for a better event than we've had in the last four days. A big thank you to Frank, Bob and the remainder of the team (not least of all Tony for driving us so well) for organising and running such a high quality recce! I found it informative, intellectually stimulating, and educational - all in the welcoming company of some good chaps. It has restored my enthusiasm for the Guild. Ray

Tony Coutts-Britton writes:

This was an excellent recce. As far as Development goes, this was just about the model tour. It was hard soldiering with near twelve hour days, but so much was achieved as to make it more than worthwhile. It was a true recce, in that we found sites and facilities hitherto unvisited and/or unknown. Attendees all presented stands, the vast majority of presenters visiting them for the first time. It was clear that a huge amount of work had gone into the research required and preparation of handouts and presentation material. By the end of the recce, we had more than enough knowledge to prepare and conduct several tours, each of multiple days length.

Special thanks goes to Frank Baldwin and Bob Darby for the organisation and to Tony Wade whose ever cheerful approach to the very difficult driving conditions made the recce a tremendous success. Nora Debievre is due special thanks for the provision of the coach. It makes a huge difference travelling in company, rather than suffering the perils and isolation of a convoy of cars.

I strongly urge as many as are able to join in the rolling programme of recces. Though historical in content of course, they are guiding centric in delivery. We had six badges on the tour out of sixteen and everyone said they came away the better for the development opportunity provided and taken. The presentations were all of Assignment 1 standard and more.

P.S. It was also huge fun!
