Norwich 21st - 23rd March

Just back home after a excellent weekend in 'Nairich', we were treated to some diverse subjects, starting with an interesting and informative talk from Steve Smith on Zeppelins over Norfolk, then we enjoyed a couple of great walks around the City led by Rob West following Ketts Rebellion and Jo Hook outlining the Luftwaffe Baedeker raids, we also got a guided tour from the curator of the museum around the military section in the castle!

An unexpected bonus was the fantastic bookshop by the Hotel that at least ten of the attendees bumped into each other in their free time on Saturday!

Can I thank the speakers please and also say big thanks to Jo Hook for her hard work providing such an enjoyable weekend,

Kind regards,
Scottie.

"An informative and relaxed weekend in one of the lesser-known parts of the country*, but one with lots of history behind it; we traveled in time from pitchforks to blitz bombing, without going outside the city walls, and learned a lot about events many of us knew little about.  The impromptu Guild gathering in the nearby secondhand bookshop's military (and maritime) section was a surprise to the owner, who made a significant number of sales! A comfortable rabbit-warren of a hotel, a good pub for "pre- and post-tour discussions" and an interesting city to visit - thanks to Jo for the work involved in running the event."

*   Not sure if Jo would wish this phrase to be replaced with her words, which were "... geographically the arse of England" ???

"Kett's rebels took the city by crossing the river here - just where we're standing!"

Deepcut February 8th 2014

Lady & Gents,

I Just wanted to pass on my thanks to you all for your hard work in providing such an informative and enjoyable day yesterday at the RLC museum.

Thanks once again to you all, I look forward to catching up with you all again sometime,  perhaps at the Norwich weekend?

Kind regards,

Scottie. (Tony Scott)

Alison

Just a quick note to thank you for organising yesterday's event. All in all it was a thoroughly enjoyable day with interesting talks and loads of grub!

Thank you for setting it up, I hope that the success of yesterday's event might lead to more 'Masterclass' type events around the various hundredth anniversaries of WW1 as the next four years go by.

Best Wishes

Roger (Lye)

Hi Alison,

Just a quick big ‘thank you’ for organising such a great day!

It was not only very informative for us all, so a great thank you to all the speakers, but it was also a really great ‘get together’ in a new venue, and the use of a museum adds a real additional interest to the day.

I think a presentation day on a specific theme is a great idea. I do know GBG has done them before, but this seemed to work very well.

In the light of present anniversaries, may be you could centre days around specific years/ battles of WW1 or Arnhem, Normandy, Waterloo etc….just a thought.

I do also appreciate that you also need to fit validation into the process

I don’t know if any of the presentations will be available for down loads, as there was some really good information that would be useful.

Anyway, a really big ‘thank you’ for such a great day!

Regards

David (Winn)

AGM Bromsgrove 2013

Thank you very much indeed to the Chairman, Secretary and Council for a really good weekend in Bromsgrove. I particularly enjoyed the two Fellowship Presentations that I managed to catch. The best aspect of the weekend was the number of keen new members who attended and it was a great pleasure to meet both them and the “Old and Bold”. As the Guild member responsible for closing the bar (unofficial but key role that I used to share with Wethers but now do alone) it was a relief to stay somewhere that did actually have a closing time and did not just stay open until breakfast. Food, especially the Guild Dinner, and all aspects of administration were spot on. As my retirement from the Army rushes towards me I will hopefully deliver of my “notes to self” to produce photos for website, article for Despatches and organise an event. On the latter Chris Finn and I are planning to combine to deliver a weekend in 2015 entitled “The BEF from the Maas to the Lys. May 1940” as an antidote to the wave of Great War tours we will all be doing

John Cotterill

Thanks very much for super weekend.
You both did and continue to do an excellent job.
The Guild is in safe hands.

Steve Stewart of STG

Thank you for the invite to the AGM. Steve and I found it most enjoyable and enlightening and it was great to make contact with some more guides who are interested in the project.

Gillian Ruff STG

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the Guild AGM weekend and it was good to see so many people becoming serious guides. Great honour also to present the Will Townend prize – speech was off the cuff with ten minutes notice and slightly slurred due to high consumption of very good wine!
